Contacting Indigenous People

Updated: Jan 17, 2022

We have reached out to four Indigenous groups as follows.

To the Katzie, March 11, 2021

Hello Debbie,

My neighbours and I are concerned about the future use of the 300 acres of Federal Lands that are currently in transition - either in its current form, or if sold, as an addition to the Campbell Heights Industrial Park.

As the Federal government undertakes this process, I understand it is engaged with the local Indigenous Peoples. It is my understanding that you are part of the related discussions. Can you advise me about how the Indigenous interests would be best served in the future use of the land?

Of course, it would be good to meet and discuss these matters. Would you be open to a meeting with a couple of us? Or perhaps there are others you can suggest we meet to understand the Indigenous interests?

To the Sto:Lo, March 18, 2021

Hello,

I am seeking advice about any Indigenous interest in a 300 acre Federal Parcel of land at 3883 192nd St in Surrey. Apparently, the federal government is considering disposal and I would like to find out which band or bands are involved in negotiations or discussions about this.

Thanks for your help,

Nigel Bell

To the Semiahmoo, March 18, 2021

Hi Joanne,

My neighbours and I are reaching out to local Indigenous People to learn if they have an interest in the 300 acres of Federal Land at 3884 192nd Street in Surrey. We live adjacent to the property. Apparently, the feds are in the process of either finding a new tenant or selling the land. If sold, it would become part of the Campbell Heights Industrial development. Do the Semiahmoo have an interest? Regards, Nigel Bell

To the Musqueam, March 24, 2021

Dear Larissa Grant,

My neighbours and I are concerned about the future use of the 300 acres of Federal Lands that are currently in transition - either in its current form, or if sold, as an addition to the Campbell Heights Industrial Park in South Surrey. As the Federal government undertakes this process, I understand it is engaged with the local Indigenous Peoples. It is my understanding that local bands are part of the related discussions. Can you advise me about how the Indigenous interests would be best served in the future use of the land? I believe the Musqueam have been part of similar discussions related to Federal land in Richmond. If this is of interest to the Musqueam, it would be good to meet and discuss these matters. Would you be open to a meeting with a couple of us? Or perhaps there are others you can suggest we meet to understand these local Indigenous interests? To the Semiahmoo, November 5, 2021

Dear Harley Chappell,

We have read in the recent press about your concerns regarding last minute decisions on the part of Metro Vancouver and the City of Surrey that did not provide adequate Semiahmoo First Nation consultation in decisions about Campbell Heights South.. My neighbours and I are concerned about the future use of the approximately 300 acres of Federal Lands that are currently in transition - either in its current form, or if sold, as an addition to the Campbell Heights North Industrial Park.

As the Federal government undertakes this process, we believe and hope that the Semiahmoo First Nation are part of the related discussions. Can you advise me about how the Indigenous interests would be best served in the future use of this land?

Of course, it would be good to meet and discuss these matters. Would you be open to a meeting with a couple of us? Or perhaps there are others you can suggest we meet to understand the Semiahmoo First Nation interests?
